Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens better known by her stage name Queen Latifah, is an American rapper actress and singer. In music, film and on television, Queen Latifah has received the award of two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award and six additional Grammy nods and has been nominated for the Emmy Award. Queen Latifah was born in Newark, New Jersey. The daughter is Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Her parents divorced at the age of Latifah was ten. Latifah attended Catholic School in Newark, NJ and was educated by her family's Baptist Church. Latifah can be described as an Arabic word which means "delicate and gentle". Her cousin bestowed it on her when she was eight. Latifah is a tall 5'10 girl who was on the high school basketball team. She performed the song "Home" from The Wiz in a performance in her high school. Latifah was a member of Ladies Fresh, a rap collective that started her journey into beatboxing. Latifah was among the founding members of the form of Flavor Unit which at that time consisted of MCs who were grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka DJ Mark the 45 King recorded an audition recording of Queen Latifah's song Princess of the Posse. He gave it back to Yo! MTV Raps The Fab 5 Freddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the song and signed Latifah in 1988, to drop her first track Wrath of My Madness.
